1st year marketing student excels on work experience

During the Easter Holidays in March, Chloe Ireland, 18, a 1st year Marketing, Communications and Advertising student from Sheffield Hallam University has completed one week’s work experience with CQ Strategic Marketing. Chloe accompanied Managing Director, Jackie Cook, to three client premises including Rollem in Tankersley, Barnsley, LBBC Group of companies in Stanningley, Leeds and Newburgh Precision in Rotherham.

CQ Strategic Marketing provides marketing strategy, planning, coaching and practical support tailored to the individual business. Based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire they provide ongoing support or one off projects to SME’s and business support organisations in local, national and international markets.

Jackie Cook, Managing Director of CQ Strategic Marketing said “Chloe has really added value to our team during her week’s experience.  Professional in her approach in client meetings, producing work of a high standard efficiently. She shows real commitment to a career in marketing.”

Rollem has developed an international reputation as leading print finishing equipment suppliers. They are renown for quality, productivity and reliability in their print finishing machines. Whilst at Rollem, Chloe spent the morning in the client’s office, managing their social media accounts, developing skills on Hootsuite. She also undertook market research and built a database of target clients for Rollem using her skills on Excel.

On Tuesday, Chloe attended a meeting with LBBC Beechwood about planning their presence at the national trade show, Subcon 2016. Alongside this, she also attended a meeting with the Managing Director of LBBC Group of companies about the branding of their new company; LBBC Resomation.

Newburgh Precision is a manufacturer of precision machined and fabricated engineering components and assemblies for all industrial sectors across the UK and overseas. Chloe accompanied Managing Director, Jackie Cook, to her office at Newburgh Precision’s premises.

During Chloe’s work experience, she also managed CQ Strategic Marketing, CQ 4 Small Biz and CQ Marketing Academy’s social media accounts, as well as creating target databases for CQ Strategic Marketing and CQ 4 Small Biz, gathering data of potential targets across the UK. She also produced directions to CQ Strategic Marketing’s new offices in Durham, Leeds and Birmingham for the company website and brochure. Chloe also updated the Brand Guidelines manual for CQ Strategic Marketing, now that the company has grown into four different brands, which involved updating many different documents and collating standards into one document.

Chloe Ireland said “This experience has given me a wider understanding of the marketing industry and has taught me many valuable skills in aspects such as managing marketing though social media, the development of brand guidelines, and putting together target databases. Not only this but by spending the week with Jackie, I have seen partly what it takes to manage a growing business”.

Winning customer loyalty for long term benefit

In an increased push to see Return on Investment for your marketing activity many companies focus their activity purely on their customer markets. However by creating advocates for your product or service these can be an effective sales force and brand reinforcement for both existing and potential customers.

Relationship marketing focuses on customer loyalty and long-term customer engagement rather than shorter term goals like customer acquisition and individual sales.  By adopting a longer term relationship marketing approach rather than a one-off transactional marketing approach you build a solid customer base but you also add greater value building trust and understanding of the way each others businesses and industry sectors work. The same approach can be adopted with the other key influences on the business and its customer markets.

We commonly find that both in a local business community or a specific industry we all comment that ‘everyone knows everyone else’ so just imagine the power of that sense of community if a majority hold a high opinion of your product or service.  By marketing through your employees you engage your workforce to be understand the product or service and with open communication they buy in to where the business is going and it’s approach and values with the additional benefit that they become your best advocates.

Suppliers are also key to a business achieving their goals without them you may not be able to deliver that order for that customer that is needed in a hurry, but they are also dealing with others who may need your service.  The same applies for other markets whether that is other suppliers targeting the same companies you do, industry bodies, universities, recruitment etc.  By building that network and communicating regularly where your business is, what it is capable of and what your goals and ideal business would be, you can all help each other.

When planning your marketing campaigns don’t forget to incorporate your internal marketing, make sure your members of staff understand the business and marketing goals, campaigns and results. There is nothing worse than that customer phone call referring to an e-shot sent by the marketing department that the sales team or person answering the phone doesn’t know about!

This can be shared industry knowledge, sales referrals, potential employees, any number of benefits so next time you plan your marketing campaigns don’t forget to include internal, supplier, recruitment, influence and referral markets.
